Purpose
The National Park College Upward Bound program encourages students in grades 9-12 in the Garland County area to complete high school and develop their plans to attend a postsecondary educational program through tutoring, cultural enrichment, and summer sessions.
The Power of Upward Bound
Research shows that overall, more than eighty percent (80%) of Upward Bound graduates enter institutions of higher learning. These graduates are more than twice as likely to enroll in post-secondary education as students from similar backgrounds who did not participate in an Upward Bound Program.

- Academics & ACT Prep
- Weekly tutorials after school to cultivate effective study skills, time management, and test taking skills to help students progress academically
- Summer academy focusing on preparatory classes, ACT workshops, and free college courses at National Park College
- ACT waivers available for Juniors and Seniors
- College Readiness & Planning
- Information on scholarships, grants, loans, and work study programs, along with assistance filling out FAFSA
- Assistance with career exploration, college admissions, choosing a major, and college survival skills
- College tours of some of the most popular colleges in Arkansas along with college application waivers
- Social & Cultural Enrichment
- Cultural enrichment activities consisting of music, art, and community service events
- Summer trip with museums, art institutes, and historical landmarks
- Team building and leadership training
How much will it cost?
There is no cost to students or family, just the investment of time and interest in your future. Upward Bound is 100% federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
In fact, students can receive a stipend of up to $30 per month based upon the student's commitment/participation, attitude in the program, and performance in school.
Who is Eligible for Services?
To receive free services, a student must:
- Show a strong interest in preparing for and attending college
- Be enrolled in the public schools of Mountain Pine or Hot Springs High School
- Meet qualification guidelines
- Show a willingness to commit to the program
The Upward Bound program is funded to serve 60 students in grades 9-12 in the public schools of Mountain Pine and Hot Springs. 2017-18 budget: $257,500; 100% funded through federal TRIO funds.
