Caleb Grisham, faculty member in the Math/Science division, attended the 41st American
Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) National Conference November
19 – 22, 2015, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He had a terrific experience obtaining discipline-specific
professional development. He attended sessions over a variety of topics including
flipping the calculus classroom, the French mathematical impact, and teaching multivariable
calculus with 3D manipulatives, among others. An active participant in the conference,
he served as one of two Arkansas delegates in the General Delegate Assembly, the formal
voting body that votes on motions including budgets, leadership structure, and position
statements. He was the representative of the Arkansas Mathematical Association of
Two-Year Colleges (ArkMATYC) at the Regional Affiliate Luncheon where he gave a brief
presentation on the activity of the Arkansas affiliate.
Caleb delivered a 50-minute presentation titled "From Power Series to Fun Fractions
with Wacky Decimal Expansions" in which he demonstrated to a crowd of over 70 mathematics
instructors from across the country how to construct fractions whose decimal expansions
reveal surprising familiar integer sequences. This opportunity to learn and network
was invaluable and has definitely made Caleb a better teacher and professional.
